- Mac™ OS on the PowerPC™ Microprocessor, Testimonials-In Store Demo CD
-
- ==================================================================
- 1. OVERVIEW
- ==================================================================
- This presentation was developed by Motorola and Apple to show the advantages
- of the Mac OS on the PowerPC microprocessor in ways your customers will
- appreciate and understand. It depicts the kinds of computers and software
- real people need and the ways they use them, from kids in school to grown-ups
- at work. You won't find a lot of benchmarks and statistics here—this story is
- not for techies but for the people who buy systems from you every day.
-
- The four sections of the presentation cover the prime selling points for the
- Mac OS and PowerPC systems.
-
- "The Internet" shows how combining the Mac OS with PowerPC microprocessors
- makes it easier to access the universe of information available on the Global
- Net.
-
- "Learning" makes it clear that Mac OS on PowerPC microprocessors is the
- superior solution for educational applications, both in school and at home.
-
- "Multimedia" depicts the robustness of PowerPC systems running the Mac OS as
- workstations for creating multimedia presentations and as ideal platforms for
- delivering them.
-
- "Home and Office" reinforces the unparalleled ease of use provided by PowerPC
- systems running the Mac OS, making the Small-Office, Home-Office worker more
- productive, efficient, and a lot happier on the job.
-
- We really hope you'll enjoy this presentation and that you'll find it useful
- as a demo disk in your store displays. Look for new versions with up-to-date
- marketing messages periodically. And, please, let us know what you think. For
- more information on PowerPC microprocessors visit the PowerPC web site at
- http://www.mot.com/PowerPC/. For more information on the Mac OS visit the
- Apple Computer web site at http://www.apple.com/.
-
- This is a high-performance multimedia presentation optimized for playback on
- higher-end Power Macintosh systems. Best performance can be achieved by
- playing this on a system that meets the recommended requirements. For optimal
- performance, copy this CD to a hard drive that has at least 210 Megabytes of
- free hard space. (If possible de-fragment your hard drive.) Simply drag the
- CD's icon to your hard drive—copying will take a few minutes. Be sure to
- drag the icon and not individual files—certain essential files are hidden.
- Then, eject the CD, open the folder containing the CD's contents and
- double-click the MacOS/PPC icon.
-
- To protect both the CD and the system on which it's running from casual
- interference, most of the user controls have been hidden from view. Click on
- the Motorola icon (circle with the 'M') in the lower-right hand corner of the
- screen to open the door containing the hidden controls.

- ==================================================================
- 2. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS FOR RUNNING A CDFACTORY TITLE
- ==================================================================
-
- Recommended System Configuration
-
- Power Macintosh system
- 8 MB free RAM
- 4X CD-ROM drive
- System 7.5* or higher
- Thousands of colors (16-bit color)
- QuickTime 2.1 or higher
-
- *Systems running System 7.5 through 7.5.2 require an additional extension -
- Sound Manager 3.1
-
-
- If your system does not meet the recommended system configuration above, the
- contents of the CD-ROM can be copied to and run from the system's hard drive,
-
- provided the system meets the following minimum requirements:
-
- Macintosh system with 68040 processor
- 5 MB free RAM
- CD-ROM drive
- System 7.1 or higher
- 256 colors (8-bit color)
- QuickTime 2.0 or higher
- Sound Manager 3
-
- ==================================================================
- 3. QUICKTIME
- ==================================================================
-
- QUICKTIME AND SOUNDMANAGER:
- Included on the disc are copies of QuickTime 2.1 and the QuickTime PowerPlug
- (for PowerMac users) plus SoundManager 3.1. If you are running System 7.5.3
- (System 7.5 Update 2.0), then only QuickTime and the QuickTime PowerPlug are
- necessary. System versions earlier than 7.5.3 also require SoundManager 3.1.
- INSTALL THESE INTO THE "EXTENSIONS" FOLDER OF YOUR SYSTEM FOLDER AND RESTART.
- Be sure to remove any other copies of QuickTime or SoundManager from your
- extensions folder. If you already have at version 2.1 of QuickTime installed
- you do not need to install the new versions. The PowerPlug is for Power Mac
- machines only; it speeds up playback considerably. Do not install this if
- you do not have a Power Mac.
- -----------------------------------------------------
-
- For optimum performance, TURN OFF ALL EXTENSIONS EXCEPT THE CD-ROM INITS,
- QUICKTIME AND SOUND MANAGER.
-
- ==================================================================
-
- 4. RUNNING CDfactory
- ==================================================================
-
- The CDfactory is ready to launch! To run any demo, double-click on the alias
- icon.
-
- Once the presentation is running, it will continue indefinitely. Users can
- click on any of the buttons on the left side of the screen to jump to
- specific content area; left unattended the presentation will return to the
- beginning and continue playing.
-
- This presentation has been designed to play in public areas. To protect both
- the CD and the system on which it's running from casual interference, most of
- the user controls have been hidden from view.
- Click on the Motorola icon (circle with the 'M') in the lower-right hand
- corner of the screen to open the door containing the hidden controls. The
- play/pause button operates just like the play/pause button on a VCR . The
- Next and Previous buttons (on either side of the topmost slider) move to the
- sections of the presentation just before or after the one currently playing.
- The slider allows free access to any section contained within the category
- that's playing ("Learning," for example).
-
- The volume slider adjusts the audio volume.
-
- The Quit button exits the presentation entirely.
- NOTE: The usual keyboard commands for quitting an application (CMD-Q or CMD-.
- have been disabled for this presentation. You must use the Quit button to
- exit.)
-
- Tip: If you'd like for the presentation to begin when the system boots, place
- an alias for the Player's icon in the Startup Items folder of the System
- Folder. Be sure the CD-ROM disk is in the drive when you re-boot.
-
- ==================================================================
- 5. TROUBLE SHOOTING
- ==================================================================
- POOR PERFORMANCE:
- 1) If the program seems to bog considerably (QuickTime movies not playing
- smoothly or skipping), this is usually a symptom of low system memory. Make
- sure you have at least 4000K RAM available for the CDFactory title;
-
- 2) Programs running in the background can greatly affect performance. Quit
- all other programs when running CDfactory, including network software.
-
- 3) If you have a double-speed CD-ROM drive, expect some delays as compared to
- a quad-speed system. Systems with the minimum requirements listed will
- deliver optimal playback if the contents of the CD are copied to the Hard
- Drive, provided that drive has 210 Mb of free space. Simply drag the CD's
- icon to the Hard Drive's icon. Eject the CD-ROM disk and play the
- presentation directly from the hard drive.
-
- 4) Screen Savers. If a screen saver kicks in during use of CDfactory,
- the program will operate unreliably (some images may be obscured and it
- may crash.) Screen savers may kick in after their allotted period of
- inactivity even if movies and animations have been playing on the screen
- during this period. It's best to turn off screen savers temporarily.
-
- 5) Make sure that QuickTime is loaded. Open Extensions Manager to see if the
- QuickTime extension, PowerPlug extension (if you are using a PowerMac), and
- Sound Manager (if needed) are loaded.
